Free Like a Girl crushes them in Louisiana Jewel
Free Like a Girl made a statement Friday at Delta Downs, when she won the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel by 18 1/2 lengths over Streak of Silver. It was another two and a quarter lengths back in third to Serape.
The Jewel was restricted to 2-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana.
Free Like a Girl ($15.20) was making her two-turn debut in the seven furlong race and stalked leader Miss Jana in third as that one put up fractions of 23.15 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.94 for the half-mile.
Free Like a Girl advanced three wide on the final turn, took the lead into the stretch, and increased her advantage through the lane while covering the distance on a fast track in 1:28.38.
Pedro Cotto, Jr., was aboard for trainer Chasey Deville Pomier.
Free Like a Girl was winning her second consecutive stakes behind a $60,000 division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity in September at Evangeline Downs. She is a daughter of El Deal and she races for Gerald Bruno, Jr.
Free Like a Girl has now won 3 of 7 starts, and the first-place check of $60,000 on Friday pushed her earnings to $135,713.
