Free Like a Girl continues streak with My Trusty Cat victory

Free Like a Girl won her third consecutive stakes race Friday, when she held off a bid from Sea Level for a 1 1/2-length victory over that one in the $100,000 My Trusty Cat at Delta Downs.
The win came following Free Like a Girl’s more than 18-length romp in the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel on Oct. 22 at Delta and a $60,000 division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Memorial Futurity on Sept. 17 at Evangeline Downs.
Both of those races came against Louisiana-breds, while Free Like a Girl defeated open company in the My Trusty Cat. The one-mile race was for 2-year-old fillies.
Free Like a Girl ($6) settled in third off dueling leaders Mercury Head and Viv Viv Viv through fractions of 22.89 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.64 for the half-mile. Free Like a Girl took command soon afterward and following six furlongs in 1:14.13 went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:41.97.
Pedro Cotto Jr. was aboard for trainer Chasey Deville-Pomier.
Following the top two finishers, it was another 15 1/2 lengths back in third to Mama Said No.
Free Like a Girl is a daughter of El Deal who races for her trainer, as well as Pomier-Deville’s father, Carl Deville, and Gerald Bruno Jr. She has now won 4 of 8 starts, and the first-place check of $60,000 on Friday pushed her earnings to $195,713.
