Free: Del Mar pick three play for Saturday, Aug. 16
DEL MAR, Calif. – I want to “get live” to a high-odds single in the final leg of the first pick three Saturday at Del Mar. I do not want to spend much to get there.
So I won’t. If the pick three blows, I plan a win wager on the “price horse,” assuming he starts at 6-1 or higher (his morning line is 12-1).
Pick three (races 1-3)
Race 1
A sprint for older maidens has two main contenders. They are HE’S A BLING (#2) and VEGAS STRIP (#6). One is speed, and the other is late speed.
Race 2
A first-level turf allowance for fillies and mares is topped by two lightly raced prospects exiting “live” races. They are KADESHA (#4) and SISTAS STROLL (#6).
Race 3
An upset candidate lurks in this maiden-40 starter. GRAND HUMOR (#7) could be lone speed. He goes inside to outside, meets a field void of pace, and with a clean start might be long gone at 12-1 in the program.
The strategy outlined below offers a chance to hit the pick three on three tickets or only one.
$1 pick three; races 1-3
Race 1: Nos. 2, 6
Race 2: Nos. 4, 6
Race 3: No. 7
First ticket cost = $4
$1 pick 3; races 1-3
Race 1: “All 7”
Race 2: Nos. 4, 6
Race 3: No. 7
First ticket cost = $14
$1 pick 3; races 1-3
Race 1: Nos. 2, 6
Race 2: “All 8”
Race 3: No. 7
First ticket cost = $16
Total cost = $34
