Free: Del Mar horses to watch for week of Nov. 14, 2022

Brad Free|Nov 16, 2022

PERCOLATE

Trainer: Michael McCarthy

Last race: Nov. 11, race 5

Finish: Second by head

Beyer: 77

Turf miler unable to get past drifting-out pacesetter. No inquiry posted, but jockey on winner suspended three days for interference. Percolate can win similar N2L starter.

ATOMIC DROP

Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: Nov. 11, race 6

Finish: First by one and three-quarter lengths

Beyer: 81

Despite an impossibly wide trip in Cal-bred allowance dirt mile, gelding burst away and galloped out well. Might be primarily a Del Mar specialist, but has won at Santa Anita.

LEYAS CANDY

Trainer: Mark Glatt

Last race: Nov. 11, race 6

Finish: Fourth by two and one-half lengths

Beyer: 76

Sired by sprint stallion Danzing Candy, Cal-bred sprinter found it a stretch to get two-turn mile. Had a wide trip pressing pace, flattened out. Follow when he shortens to one turn.

SPYCATCHER

Trainer: Mark Glatt

Last race: Nov. 11, race 7

Finish: Third by three-quarters

Beyer: 84

Maiden who ran second in summer G2 Del Mar Derby used this minor stake as a prep. Pressed pace, hung tough in ideal prep for G1 Hollywood Derby on Dec. 10. Live longshot.

FAIZA

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Last race: Nov. 12, race 4

Finish: First by three and one-half lengths

Beyer: 74

Debut filly by Girvin dazzled in maiden sprint for juvenile fillies. Pressed pace, won under a hold in blazing 1:09.28. Will be tough in G1 Starlet on Dec. 10 at Los Alamitos.

SIXTEEN ARCHES

Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: Nov. 12, race 5

Finish: Second by one and three-quarter lengths

Beyer: 78

G2-placed filly ran super in nine-furlong entry-level turf allowance, with 34.79 final three furlongs. Longshot for G1 American Oaks at a mile and a quarter Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.

PAULLIAC
Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: Nov. 12, race 9

Finish: Second by head

Beyer: 61

Irish import making U.S. debut in maiden turf mile broke slowly, saved ground, rallied wide, with 23.09 final quarter mile. Juvenile filly tough to beat next out in maiden turf mile.

SULLY

Trainer: John Shirreffs

Last race: Nov. 13, race 6

Finish: Fourth by one and one-quarter lengths

Beyer: 78

Promising debut by juvenile colt. Set pace inside under pressure, hung tough to deep stretch, tired. Well-regarded colt by Uncle Mo should be long gone next time out.
