Free: Daily double bet at Del Mar for Sunday, Nov. 9
Two prime wagering opportunities Sunday at Del Mar are late in the card, races 7 and 8.
Unfortunately for bettors hoping to string together a pick three or pick four, the races surrounding races 7 and 8 are land mines.
Race 6 is a soft maiden-20. Good luck with that. Race 9 is a turf route for California-bred maidens. Good luck with that, also. I picked favorites in both races (Rosa Divina in race 6; Itsgetinhotinhere, race 9). I will not bet either race.
However, the two middle prices in races 7-8 are worth hammering in a cold double.
Race 7
Sweet Profit is 5-1 in the allowance turf route. She has never raced on grass, nor has she run two turns. As a daughter of Candy Ride, the footing and surface should be just fine.
Equally important is the pace scenario. Sweet Profit is quick enough to make the lead under apprentice Drayden Van Dyke. There isn’t much other speed. And if Sweet Profit is like recent John Sadler trainees, she might be gone.
Twice in the fall at Santa Anita, Sadler stretched out sprint underachievers. Both won first-time long (Mal Verde paid $10.80 on Oct. 11; Demonica paid $9.60) on Oct. 19).
Sweet Profit will be a straight bet at 7-2 or higher, and the first half of a daily double.
Race 8
Meinertzhageni is 6-1 in this sprint stakes for California-bred fillies and mares. Her odds should be in that neighborhood. After all, she is a mere allowance winner.
But she loves the Del Mar Polytrack. Meinertzhageni has raced three times at Del Mar, with two wins and a second.
Her summer allowance win earned a number (91 Beyer) that would be fast enough to upset this field.
If the first half of the double runs out, Meinertzhageni is worth a straight bet at 9-2 or higher.
The bet:
Daily double
No. 6 Sweet Profit, to No. 1 Meinertzhageni
