Free: Cross-country plays for Thursday, April 9, 2020

Brad Free|Apr 09, 2020

A pair of longshots listed at 10-1 offer value on Thursday at Oaklawn Park, sandwiched around a late double at Gulfstream Park.

OP, race 3 (2:05 CT) – Wrath (12) trailed last out, and he is stuck outside in this $8k claiming N2L route. Nonetheless, he fits. In his maiden win two back, he earned a 64 Beyer, which equals par for this level. Last out, he was claimed by red-hot Robertino Diodoro. Post 12 at Oaklawn is not a deal-breaker at a mile and a sixteenth – 10 percent wins over the past five years. Wrath has speed for position, and is worth backing at 6-1.

GP, races 9-10 double (5:07 ET) – An entry-level allowance route offers a chance to beat the program favorite; the second half of the double is a maiden turf-route scramble.

Race 9 includes lightly raced Youngest of Five (2), who dominated maidens last out and earned a figure close to the N1X par. He may have a pace advantage over blinkers-on favorite Moretti (4). If that pair duel, last-out runner-up Admire (5) could tag them both. Willing to take a stand against potential underlay Moretti. The first half of the double will include just two – Youngest of Five and Admire.

Race 10 is a four-deep spread. Mighty Road (5) debuts for Chad Brown, whose turf-route firsters usually are well meant. Dur a Cuire (7) had a tough trip last out; she ran well the start before. Valletta (11) is favored off a solid recent third, but poorly drawn. Midnight Marvel (12) is farther outside, yet likely to improve from her disappointing debut.

The double, $1 minimum: Youngest of Five (2) and Admire (5) in race 9, with Mighty Road (5), Dur a Cuire (7), Valletta (11) and Midnight Marvel (12) in race 10.

OP, race 9 (5:09 CT) – Liam’s Tempest (7) just might upset this deep maiden-50 sprint. Last out at Sam Houston, she dueled on a hot pace and finished third behind a pair of late-runners. Now she drops to maiden claiming and faces less heat. Liam’s Tempest is worth backing at minimum odds of 6-1; expect her price will be higher.
