Free: Cross-country plays for Sunday, April 5, 2020

Brad Free|Apr 04, 2020

The wagering menu Sunday includes upset candidates at Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay Downs, and Oaklawn Park. And don’t forget about Fonner Park’s mandatory payout in the pick five that is scheduled for Tuesday. The single-ticket jackpot into Monday at Fonner is $355,847. First things first, such as these half-dozen Sunday possibilities:

TAM, race 2 (12:52 ET) – Epic Drama (3) scored a big win last out as his speed figures continue to improve. Up in class to $10k open claiming after he drilled a restricted $5k claiming field, Epic Drama goes first start off the claim by Tim Padilla, a 23 percent first-off-claim trainer the past five years. Epic Drama, a seven-win veteran listed at 8-1 in the program, can handle the jump. He is worth backing at 5-1. If lower, pass.

OP, race 2 (1:35 CT) – Her stamina is dubious, but not her speed. Perfect Rush (6) should clear this $8k claiming non-winners two sprint and perhaps wire the field. The race flow was against her last out at this class level. She set the pace and finished third behind one-two finishers that rallied that from the back. Perfect Rush, controlling speed, is listed at 6-1, but could go lower based on her pace advantage. Settle for 4-1.

TAM, race 6 (2:50 ET) – With a rail draw and a pace advantage in this turf mile, circumstances favor Classy of Course (1). She set the pace last out and won by more than three lengths. She could get the same front-running trip while moving up to N3L claiming. Respect class-drop favorite Tizaprincessa (10), but Classy of Course has never been better and is the most likely winner. Listed in the program at 4-1, will settle for 3-1.

GP, race 8 (4:41 ET) – Despite getting hot and rank, Shamrocket (11) finished second in his comeback vs. statebred maidens. Up in class to open company, with a history of improving second start back, Shamrocket should do just that. Hot trainer Christophe Clement has won with 6 of his last 12 turf-route maidens. For a longshot flyer, second-time starter Reliability (10) is worth a peek, but Shamrocket is the play at 4-1 or higher.

OP, race 8 (4:38 CT) – The front-runner to her inside merits respect, but Motion Emotion (3) has been facing better while chasing fast fractions. She drops from a Grade 3 to N3X, and is drawn outside her pace rival. If she can press the pace and put away sharp favorite Blue Moonrise (2), Motion Emotion can spring a minor upset. She is listed at 5-1, will settle for 3-1. Anything less, pass.

OP, race 9 (5:09 CT) – Speed of the speed, California shipper Ginobili (3) will be tough as the chalk in this allowance sprint for 3-year-olds. But a second shipper merits attention at 15-1. Rager (4) is the only entrant shortening from a recent route to a sprint. He will be outrun early, rally late, and possibly complete a Ginobili-to-Rager exacta: 3 with 4. In the unlikely event Ginobili misfires, a small win bet on Rager provides “suicide insurance.”
