Frankel gets first '04 Spa stakes
Personal Legend and Fast Cookie recorded victories in split divisions of Wednesday's De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga.
In the first division, worth $66,800, Personal Legend, the 13-10 favorite, ran down 6-1 longshot Lentil in the final strides to win by a head under Jerry Bailey. It was a neck back to Vespers in third.
Personal Legend ($4.60) , a 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Again owned by Edmund Gann and trained by Bobby Frankel, covered the one mile in 1:36.63 over good turf. It was the first stakes win of the meet for Frankel, who had been 0 for 7 in stakes at the meet.
In the second division, worth $67,000, Fast Cookie, under Cornelio Velasquez, took over from Fesity Bull at the eighth pole and held off the late charge of favored Snowdrops to win by three-quarters of a length. Snowdrops, who encountered traffic trouble, nosed out Super Brand for third.
Fast Cookie, a 4-year-old daughter of Deputy Minister owned by Stonerside Stable and trained by Bill Mott, covered the mile in 1:37.31 and returned $17.60 to win.
Both fillies could run back in the Grade 3, $200,000 Ballston Spa Breeders' Cup here on Aug. 30.
