France: Khalkevi wins; trip to U.S. next

The International Racing Bureau|Jun 24, 2002

Khalkevi made amends for a disappointing display in the Prix du Jockey-Club, winning the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp by a head over Shaanmer.

Castle Gandolfo was withdrawn because of an abnormal blood count, as were the other two Aidan O'Brien-trained runners on the card for the same reason. The scratch left a field of six.

Khalkevi rallied from two furlongs out to pick off Shaanmer in the shadow of the wire. Without Connexion finished third.

An American campaign is next on the winner's agenda, but he will be given a break first. "We'll now rest him and then go to the U.S.A. with him, as the firm tracks there will suit him," said his trainer, Alain de Royer-Dupre.
