France: Good Guess surges in Prix Jean Prat
Good Guess was 24-1 in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat on Sunday at Deauville Racecourse in France but won like an odds-on favorite, bursting into the clear inside the final quarter-mile and going on to a three-length victory.
French horses swept the top three placings with Sauterne second by three lengths over Breizh Sky as the actual odds-on favorite, Chaldean, faded to finish seventh in this seven-furlong straight-course contest for 3-year-olds.
Good Guess, a precocious 2-year-old, might not have stayed one mile finishing sixth in his Group 1 debut this spring, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, but there’s little doubt the colt put forth a career best on Sunday.
Racing with cover nearer the rear of a 12-runner field than the front, Good Guess was shown daylight with a little more than a quarter-mile to race and instantly picked up his pace. Sauterne, prominent from the start, was leading while racing isolated from the rest of the field on the far side of the course, but Good Guess quickly reeled him in and drew clear. Winning time over soft going in a race shortened from one mile to seven furlongs in 2019 was 1:23.26.
Fabrice Chappet trains Good Guess, who was ridden by Stephane Pasquier. Good Guess is by Kodiac out of Zykina, by Pivotal.
