Three races into his career, the unbeaten colt Look de Vega is at the center of European flat racing. The winner of the French Derby in June, Look de Vega will start for the first time in three months as a strong favorite in Sunday’s Group 2 Prix Niel for 3-year-olds at 1 1/2 miles at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. Look de Vega will be tried at the distance for the first time. He is the future-book favorite at 7-2 to win the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at the same distance against older horses on Oct. 6 at Longchamp. Trained by the father-and-son team of Carlos and Yann Lerner, Look de Vega is part of a field of six in the $144,200 Prix Niel, one of three major races on Sunday’s program at Longchamp. Look de Vega will be ridden by Ronan Thomas, who has been aboard the colt for all three of his wins, including a maiden race at 1 1/8 miles last November and an allowance race at 1 1/4 miles. The French Derby was run at 1 5/16 miles. Look de Vega stalked the pace before winning by two lengths over First Look. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Following the French Derby, Sosie won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at 1 1/2 miles for 3-year-old colts and fillies at Longchamp in July in his first start at the distance. The most lucrative race at Longchamp on Sunday is the Group 1 Prix Vermeille for fillies and mares at 1 1/2 miles. Worth $665,000, the race drew a field of 12, led by Opera Singer and Sparkling Plenty, who was supplemented to the race for $47,000 on Thursday. Opera Singer, who is expected to be favored, won the Group 1 Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles at Goodwood Racecourse on Aug. 1 in England, her first win in three starts this year for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Opera Singer, who tends to run near the front, will race at 1 1/2 miles for the first time in the Prix Vermeille. Sparkling Plenty won the Group 1 French Oaks at 1 5/16 miles at Chantilly Racecourse north of Paris in June and was third by a length in the Nassau Stakes after a troubled start. Sparkling Plenty also will start at 1 1/2 miles for the first time in the Prix Vermeille. Emily Upjohn, winner of the Group 1 Coronation Cup against males at Epsom Racecourse in England in 2023, and Bluestocking, winner of the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes against fillies and mares at The Curragh on June 29 in Ireland, are two other prominent runners. O’Brien is expected to win the Group 2 Prix Foy for older horses at 1 1/2 miles earlier on the Longchamp program with Continuous, who was the odds-on favorite in early betting Friday. Continuous, who has won 5 of 10 starts, was fifth in the 2023 Arc. He won for the first time this year in his second start of the season in the Group 3 Royal Whip Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on Aug. 17 at The Curragh as the 4-7 favorite. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
