SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With heavy rains from Tropical Storm Debby likely to impact racing at Saratoga on Friday and Saturday, the New York Racing Association plans to card the Grade 1 Fourstardave and Grade 1 Saratoga Derby as contingency races for Sunday’s card. That means, should the weather dictate that turf racing cannot be conducted Saturday, those two races will be run Sunday, as drawn. They would be run as the final two races on the card and be excluded from horizontal wagers such as the late pick five and pick six. On Aug. 3, wet weather forced all races off the turf. NYRA canceled the Saratoga Derby and Grade 2 Troy and rescheduled them for Saturday. Should the Troy be forced off the turf on Saturday, it would be run on the dirt. As of Wednesday, the forecast in Saratoga for Friday called for between one and two inches of rain, but the forecast for Saturday, at least by late morning, and certainly Sunday were for dry conditions. NYRA is monitoring weather forecasts closely and will provide updates as necessary. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
