Indiana-bred horses take center stage Wednesday at Indiana Grand, with four statebred stakes on the nine-race card. A pair of $150,000 dirt stakes for 3-year-olds will be run at a mile and 70 yards on the main track, while a pair of $85,000 races for older horses will be run over the turf course. The $150,000 Indiana First Lady will be run as the sixth race and attracted a full field of 12 3-year-old fillies. The $85,000 Florence Henderson is slated as the seventh race and attracted a full field of fillies and mares to go 1 1/16 miles on turf. Next up is the $150,000 Governor’s for 3-year-olds. Eleven horses are set to go a mile and 70 yards over the main track. Finally, the ninth race is the A.J. Foyt, a 1 1/16-mile turf contest that attracted 12 horses ages 3 and up as well as two also-eligibles. Both races were at two turns for trainer Patrick McBurney. ◗ She has two of the highest Beyer Speed Figures in the field, with an 80 and a 66 in her last two races. ◗ The jockey/trainer combo has won at a 30 percent clip over the past two years, according to DRF's Formulator. :: Learn more about Formulator | Follow the @DRFFormulator Twitter feed and get free Formulator facts Cactus Joe (Last 3 Beyers: 66-66-55) ◗ She has won her last two races for trainer Randy Matthews. Both victories were local, the Ellen’s Lucky Star on July 9 at a mile on turf and a statebred allowance race June 14 going 1 1/16 miles over the main track. ◗ Jockey Oriana Rossi has won 3 of 4 starts (75 percent) for trainer Randy Matthews. ◗ She has three wins with a second and a third in five local starts. Elegant Model (Last 3 Beyers: 58-76-47) ◗ She has won 3 of 4 main-track starts locally for trainer Tommy Drury Jr. The 76 Beyer earned two races ago in a one-mile, open race against 3-year-olds and up is the second-highest Beyer achieved by a horse in the race. ◗ She gets blinkers for the first time. Drury has a 22 percent strike rate over the past year with horses with first-time blinkers. ◗ She is the only horse in the race to have two local victories over the main track at a mile or longer. FLORENCE HENDERSON STAKES, RACE 7 KEY CONTENDERS Wild Swava (Last 3 Beyers: 75-82-80) ◗ She has won 7 of 9 starts on turf and is 2 for 2 locally. She has been running in open company all year and has five wins in seven starts in 2014. ◗ She has won 3 of 4 turf starts at the 1 1/16-mile distance. ◗ The Mike Maker/Francisco Torres combo has won at a 30 percent clip over the past two years. Dreamin Big (Last 3 Beyers: 73-70-82) ◗ She won this race last year by 8 1/2 lengths, earning a 91 Beyer, her lifetime-best. It will take a repeat of that effort to win this. GOVERNOR’S STAKES, RACE 8 KEY CONTENDERS Proud Azteca (Last 3 Beyers: 86-83-79) ◗ He is cross-entered in the A.J. Foyt and will be the favorite in either spot. Guessing he will go in the Foyt as he has never run on the main track. Huntstown (Last 3 Beyers: 91-65-40) ◗ He won big in his last start, earning a race-high 91 Beyer in the Snack at a mile on turf. The main track is the big question here. ◗ Trained by Wayne Mogge and ridden by Malcolm Franklin, they have paired to win at a 50 percent clip locally over the past five years. Bourne Free (Last 3 Beyers: 71-30-66) ◗ He won big in his last start going 1 1/16 miles locally, earning a 71 Beyer, one of the highest dirt figures in the field. ◗ He has won three of his last four races, all locally going two turns. Notionofmine (Last 3 Beyers: 68-70-75) ◗ He has consistent Beyer figures locally and has won 2 of 5 starts here, including a 7 3/4-length victory at this distance May 27. A.J. FOYT STAKES, RACE 9 KEY CONTENDERS Proud Azteca (Last 3 Beyers: 86-83-79) ◗ He will be the favorite if he runs here. I’m Boundtoscore (Last 3 Beyers: 82-74-66) ◗ He has the highest last-race Beyer except Proud Azteca. ◗ He has won two of seven starts on turf. Sneakin Away (Last 3 Beyers: 48-62-67) ◗ Winner of this race last year, Sneakin Away has won 3 of 7 career starts on turf. With big odds on the morning line (30-1), there should be some value.
