ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario announced the passing of former director Conrad Cohen on Friday at the age of 90. Cohen’s involvement in Ontario racing started as an owner-trainer over 45 years ago. Several years later, he was elected to the HBPA board of directors and remained a director until 2024. Over the years, Cohen led the HBPA as president, vice president, and chair of the Health and Safety Committee, as well as the Rules and Medication Committee. He represented the HBPA on the board of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium. Cohen was an advocate for the health and welfare of horses and was a strong supporter of horsepeople, especially when it came to the rules and medications. He spearheaded the legalization of Lasix on race days and represented those who had positive tests. Cohen won 470 races as a trainer, and his runners earned $4.66 milllion (U.S.). He won two stakes with Judith’s Wild One in 1994 and also campaigned the stakes-placed sprinter Reddy Roadster during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He is survived by wife, Susan.
