Joe DeVivo|Apr 01, 2008

Dale Gress, 62, who won nearly 1,500 races during a 30-year career as a jockey at Mid-Atlantic racetracks, died last Thursday in Chambersburg, Pa.

Gress enjoyed his greatest success at Penn National, where he was among the track's leading riders during a career that spanned from 1967 to 1996. He rode 1,483 winners, highlighted by back-to-back seasons of 116 and 120 victories in 1972-73, the first two years of Penn National's existence. He also rode regularly at Delaware Park, Garden State Park, Charles Town, Pimlico, Laurel, and Timonium.

Gress's survivors include two daughters, Gina Brennaman and Whitney Gress.
