Forget It looks to earn spot in Kindergarten Futurity

Steve Andersen|May 02, 2014

There are 10 maiden race winners among the 58 horses entered Sunday in eight time trials for the Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos. They will provide some semblance of form in races that will help sort the rankings of the early-season 2-year-old Quarter Horses in California.

The horses with the 10 fastest finishing times in the trials, regardless of finishing positions, will advance to the $261,200 final May 18. The Kindergarten is run over 300 yards and is the first of six lucrative futurities this year at Los Alamitos, a series that ends with the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in December.

On Sunday, it will not take long to determine where some recent winners stand in the division.

In the evening’s second race, the first trial, Mystery Man, a winner of a 300-yard maiden race April 6, will start as the likely favorite in a field that includes Ynot Walk, a troubled second April 12 to Off Beat.

Off Beat is one of three maiden race winners starting in the third race, along with Jacquie O and Viento Negro. Of the three, Viento Negro had the best time in a 300-yard maiden race April 13, finishing in 15.50 seconds when winning by 1 1/4 lengths. Trained by Juan Aleman for breeder Celina Molina, Viento Negro may be one of the shorter prices in the time trials.

Molina owned Corona Cartel, who won the 1996 Kindergarten. Corona Cartel has developed into a leading stallion in Quarter Horse racing.

The quickest maiden race winner this year has been Forget It, who ran 300 yards in 15.27 seconds April 11. Trained by Jaime Gomez for the Dutch Masters III partnership, Forget It won by a half-length, overcoming a bump at the start.

In Sunday’s fifth race, Forget It drew the rail. The competition in that division includes Old Girl, a maiden race winner in 15.65 seconds April 11 as a 2-5 favorite. Jose Flores trains Old Girl as well as Mystery Man. Flores won the 2013 Kindergarten with Glitter in My Face.

Later on the program, the promising Pink Berreta, a winner in 15.40 seconds, will be favored in the sixth race. A filly by Mr Eye Opener, Pink Berreta is trained by Lindolfo Diaz and owned by Balgo Racing Team.
