Michael Burns Forester's Fortune (right) edges out Wedgewood to win the Vice Regent.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario—Forester’s Fortune outfinished another longshot, Wedgewood, when notching his first stakes in Saturday’s $150,000 Vice Regent for Ontario-sired runners.

The 4-5 favorite Silent Poet broke on top in the five-furlong inner-turf dash, but was soon joined up front by Rockcrest, Mason’s Gamble. and Warp Ride.

Silent Poet, racing between rivals, dropped back abruptly entering the turn before Rockcrest assumed command midway on the turn.

Forester’s Fortune and Wedgewood rallied wide in unison through the stretch, and Forester’s Fortune prevailed by a head under Daisuke Fukumoto, in a final time of 56.90.

Rockcrest faded to third ahead of Warp Drive, who was followed by Mason’s Gamble, Four Aces High, and Silent Poet.

After a stewards’ inquiry involving the top four finishers, Rockcrest was demoted to seventh for interference heading into the turn.

Forester’s Fortune ($18.20) earned $90,000 for the partnership of Archie Lee and Claudia Silvera. The son of Old Forester is the first stakes winner for trainer Rodney Barrow.

“I feels so good — I still can’t get over it,” Barrow said. “He always could finish fast. He’s had bad trips, but he’s got so much heart.”
