Forecast for high heat prompts Colonial Downs to cancel Monday card

Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., on Friday canceled its racing program for Monday because of excessive heat.

The high temperature Monday is forecast to be 96 degrees with a heat index of around 110.

The Monday card featured the $150,000 Colonial Cup. That stakes race will be moved to the Wednesday card and run as drawn, according to Colonial officials. Four other races on the Monday program were brought back as “extras” that could be used Wednesday, but those races will be redrawn.

Wednesday’s high temperature is forecast to be 90 degrees. Colonial races Mondays through Wednesdays.
