Fonner track report

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The field for Saturday's $100,000 Bosselman-Gus Fonner Handicap is shaping up as competitive with eight starters confirmed, plus a half-dozen others on the fence as of Wednesday morning.

Miner's Prize, trained by Forrest Kaelin, became definite for the race Wednesday morning and will be the starting highweight at 121 pounds. Kaelin will bring in Gerard Melancon to ride.

Almost Home, trained by Tom Amoss, was to van in this week from Fair Grounds, and Fight for Ally, trained by Elliott Walden, may share the ride. Amoss will bring in Sidney LeJeune to ride Almost Home.

Del Mar Danny is possible, but a decision was not expected until entries were taken on Thursday morning.

Providing there are at least eight starters, there will be a $50,000-guaranteed superfecta pool on the race. Saturday's card will have a special first post time of 1 p.m. Central.

* With Friday's opening of Prairie Meadows in Iowa, the Fonner Park jockeys' race is essentially over. Both Perry Compton and Ken Shino have shifted their tack to Altoona but will be back in town for Saturday's races. Compton, buoyed by a five-win day Friday, has a 70-53 edge over Shino. Shino booted home four winners last Saturday. Each rider posted five four-or-more win days at the meet.
