Fonner Park track report

Bill Hodtwalker|Apr 13, 2005

The Fonner Park jockey colony will present a silent auction this Saturday during the races to benefit the Jockeys' Guild Permanently Disabled Endowment Fund. Items featured in the auction include jockey attire and equipment, such as saddles, pants, goggles, and boots, plus autographed souvenirs. Bidding starts at 12:30 p.m. and will close immediately following the eighth race. Don Frazier or Perry Compton are the local Guild contacts for questions or to donate items.

* The weekend also features the 50th anniversary of the Fonner Park Special Stakes for Nebraska-bred 3-year-olds. The Colts and Geldings Division is being run Saturday and the Fillies Division is on Sunday. The Nebraska Breeders' Office is attempting to contact all past winners to invite their participation in the weekend activities.

* Luckiestofthelucky, one of two 13-year-olds who received special permission from the racing commission to race beyond the age 12, scored his first win of the year in last Sunday's card. A son of Something Lucky, Luckiestofthelucky was claimed by Milton Gaede for $2,500 in June 2001 and has kept on going. In his fourth start this year, Luckiestofthelucky pulled off the $18 upset in a $2,500 claimers for nonwinners this year, going four furlongs under leading rider Curtis Kimes. Luckiestofthelucky has a career mark of 19-19-15 from 96 starts and earnings of over $60,000.

* Nominations for the meet's showcase event, the $100,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes, closed Wednesday. As of Wednesday, there were more than 60 horses nominated to the 1 1/16-mile race. With Prairie Meadows set to open April 21 and Oaklawn Park closing this weekend, several horses have made their way into the region this spring, bringing an increase in the nominations.
