Fonner Park begins 31-day meet
Fonner Park in Grand Island, Neb., opens for a 31-date meet on Friday. The season will run through May 2.
The $75,000 Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes on April 25 again serves as the meet’s richest race. The mile and a sixteenth feature is for 3-year-olds and up. The local prep, the $20,000 Dowd Mile, will be run on April 11.
The Bosselman/Fonner, a three-turn race over the local five-furlong oval, could garner a starter out of Friday’s eighth race at Oaklawn in Grade 3 winner Remembering Rita.

“It’s sure a possibility,” trainer Doug Anderson said Tuesday. “It’s kind of home country for myself and everything, and we tried to win it one other time. We’ve breezed this horse on bullrings before, and he’s worked good over them.”
Last year, Oaklawn produced the Bosselman/Fonner winner in Rock City Roadhog.
Overall, there will be 13 stakes this meet at Fonner.
The track will race every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with one exception. There is no card on Easter, April 12. Post time for most programs is 1:30 p.m. Central, but a post of 3 p.m. will be reserved for Fridays starting March 13.
