Folklore's race days over

Folklore, last year's 2-year-old champion filly, has been retired from racing because of a fractured knee, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said.

"She had a knee that didn't respond," said Lukas, who trained Folklore for Bob and Beverly Lewis. "We were waiting for the thing to heal - it didn't respond. It would have been all right in a little while, but we thought it might compromise her ability. She's already a champion, so we decided to stop."

Folklore, a daughter of Tiznow and Contrive, won 4 of 7 starts as a 2-year-old, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park. She also won the Grade 1 Matron and the Grade 2 Adirondack and was second in the Grade 1 Spinaway and listed Astoria.

In her only start at 3, Folklore finished third in the Santa Ynez at Santa Anita on Jan. 16.

Folklore finished her career with earnings of $945,000.
