'Fog' takes first step toward race

Chuck Dybdal|Feb 10, 2006

ALBANY, Calif. - Sunday starts a big week at Golden Gate Fields for owner Harry Aleo and trainer Greg Gilchrist, the connections of Eclipse sprint champion Lost in the Fog.

In the morning, Lost in the Fog will have his first work since returning to Gilchrist's barn last month from a farm in Florida. Gilchrist said it would be an easy three-furlong work, the first of nine or 10 leading to his first race of 2006, the Golden Gate Fields Sprint on April 22.

Lost in the Fog, 4, won his first 10 career starts before finishing seventh in the Breeders' Cup Sprint last Oct. 29, his last race.

Later on Sunday, Gilchrist will send out a highly regarded 3-year-old for Aleo, Smokey Stover, who will be making his debut. A $140,000 purchase last May, was scratched on Jan. 29 when he drew the rail but came back to record a 47.40-second half-mile bullet work the next day.

Even though Smokey Stover has a solid work tab with a sprinkling of bullets, his stablemate, , who has never finished off the board in four starts, and Royal Bull.

Aleo's top 3-year-old prospects, Victorina and Frisco Star, are also scheduled to run this week.

The undefeated filly Victorina will be entered in the six-furlong Tiburon, an overnight stakes scheduled for Thursday. Frisco Star, who broke a Santa Rosa track record in his debut and scored a better-than-looked victory in his second start last month at Bay Meadows, is being pointed to next Sunday's Novato at six furlongs.

Both worked Thursday, Frisco Star earning a bullet with a 58-second five-furlong work that was best of 26. Victorina was clocked in 1:00.80 over the same distance.

Gilchrist would have preferred a slower work for Frisco Star but said he seemed to come out of the workout fine.

Also on Sunday, Another House returns in a first-level allowance sprint after losing in the last stride at Bay Meadows on Jan. 20. He has nine opponents in the six-furlong race. Another House has 2 wins and 2 seconds in 4 career starts, with both victories coming here.

Crossing Borders, moving up from the claiming ranks, has 2 wins in 3 starts here and could provide pace pressure on Another House. Real Temptation, coming off a win, could be a factor in the lane.
