ARCADIA, Calif. - Flyover and Mohaven gave trainer John Sadler his third day with two stakes wins this decade at Santa Anita on Saturday, and showed why they have excellent chances to win stakes at Del Mar this summer. Flyover and Mohaven were winners on a Saturday program with five stakes for statebreds. “I almost had three,” Sadler said on Sunday morning while watching workouts. In the day’s final stakes, the Sadler-trained Ventry Strand closed from eighth of 10 in the final furlong to finish third by slightly less than a length behind Unrivaled Time in the $127,500 Snow Chief Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Mohaven has been part of milestone days for Sadler in the recent past. At Del Mar last October, Mohaven won the Golden State Juvenile Fillies for statebreds on the same day the stable’s Super Corredora won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Super Corredora was later named champion 2-year-old filly of 2025. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Super Corredora was well beaten in two stakes earlier this year at Santa Anita and is nearing the end of a 90-day rest in Kentucky. “We’ll get her ready for a fall campaign,” Sadler said. Sadler also had a day with two stakes wins at Santa Anita in March 2020. Mohaven led throughout the $125,500 Melair Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, pulling clear by six lengths as the 3-5 favorite. Sadler trained Melair, a brilliantly quick filly who was unbeaten in five career starts in the spring and early summer of 1986. “I should have presented the trophy to myself,” Sadler joked on Sunday. Mohaven’s next start will be the $150,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for 3-year-old statebred fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar on July 24. Mohaven, owned by Legacy Ranch, may be joined in the Fleet Treat by the Sadler-trainer Liberation, who won the Soviet Problem Stakes for 2-year-old statebred fillies at a mile at Los Alamitos in December in her last start. Liberation is scheduled to resume workouts in coming days. Flyover led throughout the $101,000 Crystal Water Stakes for turf milers, the longest stakes win of his career and his second consecutive stakes win. Flyover, a 5-year-old horse by Om, won the Sensational Star Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on March 28. A winner of 6 of 11 starts, Flyover races for the family of the late Bud Johnston, Integrity Thoroughbred Racing and Ken Tevelde. At Del Mar’s summer meeting, options for Flyover include the $100,000 Wickerr Stakes at a mile on turf on July 19, or the Grade 2 Green Flash Handicap at five furlongs on turf on Aug. 22. “He’s won at a lot of different distances,” Sadler said. Del Mar’s summer meeting begins on July 17. The leading race that day is the $150,000 Oceanside Handicap for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf, a race that could draw Unrivaled Time, the narrow winner of the $127,500 Snow Chief Stakes for 3-year-old statebreds at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Saturday. Unrivaled Time closed from nine of 10 to win by a head over pacesetter Trump Era. “It was a good effort overall,” trainer Leonard Powell said. “He was able to come from behind on a course that has favored speed in the last week. “He’s still a work in progress and he’s going in the right direction.” Unrivaled Time, who races for Innergy Racing Corp. and Sonny Pais, won the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at a mile on turf for 2-year-olds at Del Mar last November. The leading sprint at the Del Mar summer meeting is the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, a $400,000 race at six furlongs on July 25. The race may include Big City Lights, who won his sixth stakes in Saturday’s $100,500 Thor’s Echo Stakes for statebreds at six furlongs. Big City Lights closed from fourth of six to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Book Smart. Big City Lights has won 9 of 17 starts. “He was pretty professional, as always,” winning trainer Richard Mandella said. Owned by Bill Peeples, Big City Lights was eighth of 14 in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November, his only previous appearance in a Grade 1 race. Grand Slam Smile targets seven figures in earnings The summertime goal at Del Mar with the 5-year-old mare Grand Slam Smile is to get her past seven figures in earnings. With a half-length win from the front in Saturday’s $101,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf, Grand Slam Smile has earned $984,120. She has won 12 of 21 starts. “Hopefully we can knock that out this summer,” trainer Sean McCarthy said on Saturday. One option for Grand Slam Smile is the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for statebred fillies and mares at a mile on turf on Aug. 15, a race she won last summer. The winner of that race receives $85,500. Grand Slam Smile races for owners and breeders Larry and Marianne Williams. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
