ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Flying Black tries to extend her winning streak to four races in Friday’s featured sixth race on the inner turf at Woodbine. The hot leading rider, apprentice Pietro Moran, has given her a vote of confidence in the conditioned allowance/optional claimer, which should sway the role of favoritism her way. A 7-year-old mare by the popular Not This Time, Flying Black has raced 37 times since her debut in October 2020 at the now defunct Gulfstream Park West, also known as Calder. She made 27 straight starts at Gulfstream Park, during which she was claimed five times. Her best race there was arguably when she cleared the first allowance condition in November 2022 on the Tapeta. Flying Black has competed predominantly at Woodbine since June 2024 and has been trained by Darwin Banach since last fall. She ended a slump when taking a June 10 starter/optional claimer at Presque Isle Downs before winning two in a row here this summer, a $25,000 claimer on the Tapeta and a $25,000 starter handicap on the inner turf with an 81 Beyer Speed Figure on Aug. 1. Moran has been aboard for all three of her wins. Leading trainer Mark Casse sends out Blitz and Wickenheiser in the 1 1/16-mile headliner. Blitz wired preliminary allowance/optional claimers on the Tapeta off a 3 1/2-month layoff while getting an 83 Beyer on July 12. Her turf form is mediocre at best. It includes a seventh in a Gulfstream engagement that was declared a no contest in late December, a performance that shouldn’t be held against her. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! She closed for second behind gate-to-wire winner Veery in her improved second start off the sidelines June 21. The Lemon Drop Kid mare is coming off a distant second behind another front-running winner on the Tapeta, Hurricane Clair, who subsequently missed the board in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor. Irish-bred Queens Command is making her first start for trainer Marty Drexler, who has a 20 percent success rate with new acquisitions. Queens Command has struggled since winning her first start on this side of the pond in January 2024 at Santa Anita. She has been idle since ending up fifth behind two next-out winners in an Oct. 14 restricted stakes at Santa Anita. My Girl Sky is moving up in class. Victorious in the restricted Thunder Bay Stakes in 2023, she won her first race since that triumph off a nine-month absence in a first-level allowance/$32,000 optional claimer Aug. 3. Cozy Curlin Kitten failed to fire at this level after winning a first-level allowance over 7 1/2 furlongs on the inner course in her June 14 season opener. Completing the field is Bolt Enoree, who was a minor player in each of her last two outings while claimed for $32,000 both times. Post time for the seven-race program is 4:30 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
