Fly On Angel sells for $195,000 to top Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December sale

Graded stakes winner Fly On Angel sold for $195,000 to lead the way as the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December mixed and horses of racing age sale posted declines compared to its strong 2019 renewal.
Fasig-Tipton reported that 182 horses were sold in Tuesday's auction at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium for gross receipts of $2,345,600. Last year's sale, which was led by a sale-record $450,000 horse, had 249 horses change hands for $4,383,700.
The average price was $12,888, dipping 27 percent from $17,605 in 2019, but comparing favorably to the average of $9,508 in 2018. The median price was $5,000, down 38 percent from $8,000 last year, but even with the 2018 figure.
The buyback rate in a selective marketplace that has become even more so with the economic impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was 23 percent, compared to 19 percent in 2019.
Fly On Angel, who was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect, sold to Cypress Creek LLC, from a consignment by Northview Stallion Station as agent for a continued reduction of racing stock for prominent regional owner Joseph Besecker.
The 3-year-old Palace Malice filly has won 4 of 11 starts thus far, including the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks in August. She also finished second in last year's Parx Juvenile Fillies.
Fly On Angel is one of four winners from as many starters out of the stakes-placed Posse mare Runge. This is the family of Grade 1 winner Videogenic, and graded stakes winners Richwoman and Street Babe also appear on the catalog page.
The sale's highest-priced weanling was a $150,000 colt by breakout young sire Laoban, sold to Machmer Hall. The colt also was the highest-priced New York-bred of the sale as this Midlantic mixed auction got a number of entries from that nearby program.
Fasig-Tipton had been scheduled to conduct a fall mixed sale in October in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. However, owing to New York state’s ongoing travel restrictions to combat the spread of COVID-19, that auction was canceled, because it would be virtually impossible for buyers and consignors from out of state to travel to conduct business. Some of the horses intended for that auction were absorbed into the Midlantic sale.
Laoban's sale-leading colt, consigned by Vinery Sales, as agent, is out of the Stonesider mare Dixie Gem. She is from the family of graded stakes winners Pure Gossip, Street Game, and Thunder Achiever.
