DEL MAR, Calif. – Fluffy Socks is returning to the scene of the non-crime. She scored the lone graded stakes win of her career last fall here at Del Mar in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante, retaining the victory following a lengthy inquiry after an incident on the far turn when she wheeled out to make her run. Winless in three starts this year, but with a form line that looks as though she’s sitting on her best race yet, Fluffy Socks has shipped west to face a good group of locals in the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, which will crown one of the 3-year-old fillies with a Grade 1 victory none has earned to date. Nine are entered in the Del Mar Oaks, a 1 1/8-mile grass race that goes as race 9 on the 11-race card. Fluffy Socks, from the powerhouse Chad Brown barn, comes off a solid second-place finish behind stablemate Technical Analysis in the Grade 3 Lake George at Saratoga last month. Technical Analysis stayed home, for the Grade 2 Lake Placid on Saturday, while Fluffy Socks headed here as Brown seeks to divide and conquer. “I thought her last race was very good. She finished well,” Brown said Thursday morning by telephone as he watched the rain fall outside his Saratoga barn. “Obviously she’s run well over the course out there. That went into the decision for sure. I was very impressed with her race last year at Del Mar.” Joel Rosario rode Fluffy Socks for the first time in the Lake George, and he has a return call, as he’s in town for the Pacific Classic card. :: Visit DRF's Del Mar shop for all your handicapping needs: Past performances, picks, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more “She’s going to have to step up,” Brown said. “She’s facing some good fillies out there.” Heading the locals are Madone and Going Global, who finished one-two in the Grade 2 San Clemente, last month’s local prep for the Del Mar Oaks. In that one-mile race, both benefited from a hot pace and a course profile that has favored late runners. Madone, rallying down the center of the course, proved best, making her 3 for 3 at Del Mar, all in one-mile grass races. She’ll need to prove she can finish as strongly going out the extra furlong. She was sixth of seven in her lone try at nine furlongs, but she was coming back on just three weeks’ rest and was wide throughout. Going Global had a five-race win streak – four since arriving here from Ireland – end in the San Clemente, in which she got through inside after minor traffic in upper stretch. She won her two prior races, both at nine furlongs, and should appreciate the added distance. :: Join DRF Bets and play the races with a $250 First Deposit Bonus. Click to learn more. Closing Remarks returns to her favorite surface after trying dirt for the first time most recently, against fellow California-breds in the Fleet Treat. She was twice second to Going Global in stakes at Santa Anita in March and April and should get a ground-saving trip under Umberto Rispoli with her rail draw. Javanica was a rare front-running winner on this course against softer last time, but she’s in with a solid chance off her runner-up to Fluffy Socks in the Jimmy Durante last fall. Traffic and interference prevented a better placing for her on May 1 at Santa Anita in the Senorita, which was won by Madone. Tetragonal was a solid third behind Madone and Going Global in the San Clemente. This will be her first start beyond a mile. Feathers, Ivy League, and Irish invader Soaring Sky complete the field. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Torrey Pines Lady Mystify will seek her third straight win and her first in a graded stakes in the Grade 3, $100,000 Torrey Pines, a one-mile dirt race for seven 3-year-old fillies that goes as race 6 and is the first of the five graded stakes Saturday at Del Mar. It’s a pivotal race for bettors, too, as it commences a Rainbow 6 sequence that will have a mandatory payout. Lady Mystify, a runaway winner against maidens at Santa Anita in February, returned from a 5 1/2-month layoff for trainer Peter Eurton to beat a first-level allowance field, including elders, going one mile last time out, with a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 77. To win, though, she’ll likely have to stalk and pounce, as stretch-out sprinters Private Mission and Day Plan figure to come away with alacrity. Private Mission, 2 for 3, always has been well regarded and is the choice of Flavien Prat, who rode both her and Lady Mystify in their most recent starts, both wins. Forest Caraway came off a 9 1/2-month layoff to beat a first-level allowance field Aug. 1. This will be her first try around two turns. I’m So Anna has won two of her last three against Cal-breds, most recently the seven-furlong Fleet Treat.
