Florida's Uncaptured the most active non-Kentucky stallion in 2017

Joe Nevills|Oct 25, 2017

Kentucky stallions perennially dominate the top of the list on The Jockey Club’s annual Report of Mares Bred, but the most active stallions in other major breeding states drew large books of their own in 2017.

The most active stallion outside of Kentucky during the 2017 breeding season was Uncaptured, a resident of Ocala Stud in Florida, who covered 140 mares. The 7-year-old son of Lion Heart met his second book of mares this year, after covering 108 mares in his debut season.

Coming in second among the non-Kentucky stallions was Champ Pegasus, who covered 128 mares at Legacy Ranch in California, and will move within the state to Barton Thoroughbreds for the 2018 season. The 11-year-old Fusaichi Pegasus horse is represented on the track by his first crop of 2-year-olds this season, led by stakes-placed Schulace.

Jess’s Dream, the only son of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, covered 122 mares in his first book. The winning Curlin horse stands at Ocala Stud.

Laoban, a Grade 2-winning son of Uncle Mo, also bred 122 mares, making him New York’s most active stallion of 2017. The 4-year-old stands at Sequel Stallions New York.

Effinex, who died suddenly earlier this month, received 110 mares in what will be his only book. The son of Mineshaft was New York’s second-most-active stallion of 2017, standing at Questroyal North, and he was slated to stand the coming season at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds.

Pennsylvania’s stallion ranks were led by newcomer Uncle Lino, a 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo who covered 103 mares at Northview PA.

He was followed closely in the Mid-Atlantic region by fellow first-year stallion Mosler, a resident of Country Life Farm in Maryland, whose book comprised 102 mares. Mosler is a 6-year-old son of War Front.

Rounding out the list of non-Kentucky stallions to cover 100 or more mares in 2017 was War Dancer, a first-year son of War Front who got 102 mares at Rockridge Stud in New York, and Grazen, a veteran sire at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in California who met 101 mares.
