Florida-breds meet in Wednesday allowance

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Wednesday’s eight-race program at Gulfstream is topped by a modest $54,000 allowance feature restricted to Florida-breds going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The race lured a field of eight, led by Indy Lyon and Chess’s Dream, both of whom have made the majority of their starts over the past two seasons against open company.
Indy Lyon returns against Florida-breds for the first time since he was re-claimed by trainer Rohan Crichton for $20,000 on July 30. A winner of seven races, the most of anyone in the field, Indy Lyon comes off a strong effort going a mile on grass earlier this month when second to the red-hot Mo Hawk, who flattered the effort by coming right back to win an open $35,000 claiming event while posting an 88 Beyer Speed Figure.

The stretch-running Chess’s Dream could benefit from what figures to be an honest pace scenario while coming off a big race of his own. He finished second on Dec. 1 behind the class-dropping Tapthespeedofsound when back in against Florida-breds for the first time in over eight months. Chess’s Dream has shown a fondness for the Gulfstream turf course, having registered two of his three wins over it.
Midnight Hurricane, a lightly raced and improving 3-year-old, won his only start on grass, but must answer the two-turn question Wednesday. Trained by Cherie DeVaux, he has raced four times and never been beyond six furlongs.
