ELMONT, N.Y. – It seemed like a good idea at the time. Coming off a dominant 5 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap at Aqueduct on March 5 with Officiating, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. thought facing restricted company in the NYRA Bets Sprint at Tampa Bay Downs was the best spot for Officiating to run next, despite wheeling back in three weeks off a career-best number. Sent off the 6-5 favorite, Officiating finished fourth in a field of six, beaten 6 1/2 lengths by Pudding. “I ran him back too quick,” Joseph said. “I was trying to pick the easier spot and not having to ship him again. That might have been a mistake on my part.” With seven weeks to recover, Officiating is back in New York to run in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Runhappy Stakes going six furlongs at Belmont Park. Chateau and Repo Rocks, second and third, respectively, in the Tom Fool, are back to take on Officiating again. In the Tom Fool, Officiating was able to run down a loose-on-the-lead Chateau, who had run his best races at Aqueduct, including a victory in the 2021 Tom Fool. “I think he’s capable of a better race,” said Rob Atras, who trains Chateau. “His last two workouts have been good. I’m hoping he’ll run his ‘A’ race, and if he does, that makes him a top contender.” :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! Get free Formulator now! Chateau will break from the rail under Kendrick Carmouche. Atras also entered Mr Phil, but said he is likely to scratch that horse for a different spot. Repo Rocks didn’t break well in the Tom Fool or else he might have been vying for the lead with Chateau. He broke better, although he bobbled, in a second-level allowance race that he won by 5 3/4 lengths on April 28 at Belmont. How he breaks under Ruben Silvera from post 3 on Saturday could determine if there is a contested pace. Drafted won the Grade 3 Toboggan at Aqueduct going seven furlongs on Feb. 5 before finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Carter on April 9. Trainer David Duggan has said the horse is better at seven furlongs, but Drafted does have four wins going six furlongs. Jose Ortiz is back on Drafted from post 2. Answer In ran a solid second in a six-furlong allowance race at Aqueduct on Feb. 15 before finishing last over a good track in the Caixa Electronica, a starter race on March 26. Vagrancy: Bella Sofia starts anew When Bella Sofia returned to trainer Rudy Rodriguez’s barn earlier this year, the end goal for the Grade 1-winning filly was more defined than the starting point. A return to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in November is the ultimate objective for Bella Sofia after she finished fourth in that race last year. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures Rodriguez had penciled in the Grade 2, $300,000 Bed o’ Roses on June 10 as a potential starting point before the filly came to hand earlier than expected, which is why she will make her 4-year-old debut in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap. “The last two works, she’s worked unbelievable,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know if she’s fit enough, but the last two works she went extremely, extremely well and she’s come back very good out of the works and has carried her weight very good. She seems like she’s ready. At the beginning, I thought I would have to do a little more work with her, but [now] I don’t see it that way.” At 3, Bella Sofia won the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom at Belmont before running fourth behind Ce Ce in the Breeders’ Cup. Saturday, in a race with other speed types, Bella Sofia drew nicely on the outside in the five-horse field. Luis Saez can survey how fast Miss Brazil and Kept Waiting are going to in front of her or decide to go himself. The most accomplished competitor Bella Sofia will face is Frank’s Rockette, a six-time stakes winner from the barn of Bill Mott. Frank’s Rockette is coming off a runner-up finish in the Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 2, her first start off a 105-day layoff. Frank’s Rockette breaks from post 2 under Flavien Prat. With only a field of five, the Vagrancy is carded as race 3 on the 11-race program.
