Flipcup comes with wide rally to win Classy 'N Smart

Michael Burns Flipcup wins the Classy 'N Smart Stakes by a neck Sunday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The Bill Mott-trained New York shipper Flipcup made her return to Woodbine a winning one Sunday in the $125,000 Classy 'N Smart Stakes.

Flipcup deserved to win the 1 1/16-mile route for Ontario-sired females. After racing in sixth on the backstretch, she commenced a five-wide rally on the far turn before getting up in the final strides to prevail by a neck over Obeah Woman. According to Trakus, she ran 83 feet farther Obeah Woman, who saved ground throughout.

Flipcup was the meet-leading 15th stakes victory for jockey Alan Garcia.

“My filly was right there in the first part of the race,” Garcia said. “She was so comfortable. I know I lost a little ground in the second turn, but she got the job done. When she saw the horse inside her, she grabbed the bridle and ran on again at the end.”

Flipcup banked $75,000 for Team Penney Racing, Wachtel Stable, and Brous Stable.

Kaviak closed belatedly on the outside for third. She was followed by Lynnessa, Ida Bambina, pacemaker Silent Treat, the favored Club One Two, and Clarkston Hope. London Tower was scratched.
