Flashy Jewel by a neck in Manitoba Derby
Flashy Jewel, a 12-1 shipper from Canterbury Park, turned back a challenge from Witt Six in the stretch to capture Monday’s $75,000 Manitoba Derby in front-running style at Assiniboia Downs.
Flashy Jewel went right to the lead and set splits of 22.80 seconds, 46.80, and 1:12 in the nine-furlong test for 3-year-olds. Witt Six, the lukewarm 3-1 favorite, stalked in second throughout and then headed Flashy Jewel in midstretch before the latter dug in gamely to prevail by a neck in 1:52.80 under Adolfo Morales.
Spider’s Jewel rallied from ninth and last to finish another six lengths back in third. He was followed by Impromptu, Quiet Ry, Carouse, Tactical Warrior, Madd Edition, and Safecracker.
Flashy Jewel earned $45,000 for his first stakes victory, which was his third consecutive win for Lothenback Stable and trainer Clay Brinson.
Holiday Maker ($5.80) won Monday’s supporting feature, the $25,000 Manitoba Oaks, by 6 1/4 lengths over Jungle Story. Supreme Rush, the 4-5 favorite, wound up third in a four-horse field of sophomore fillies.
