Flash: Undefeated Johannesburg takes Juvenile
ELMONT, N.Y. - Johannesburg proved himself the best 2-year-old colt in both Europe and the United States as the undefeated European champ swung out in the stretch and pulled away to a convincing 1 1/4-length triumph in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Odds-on favorite Officer, who came into the Juvenile with a perfect 5-for-5 record, broke slowly then rushed out to battle Came Home for the lead before wilting in the stretch and finishing fifth, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
Johannesburg ($16.40) stalked the leaders down the backstretch, but at the top of the stretch was blocked along the inside behind a wall of tiring horses. Once jockey Michael Kinane found a seam in the middle of the track, Johannesburg did the rest.
Repent, a 40-1 shot, closed on the far outside to grab second, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Siphonic. Publication was fourth.
Jump Start was pulled up after the race and removed from the track on a horse ambulance.
