Flash of Mischief edges clear in closing stages of revived St. Louis Derby
Flash of Mischief debuted in November 2020 and has raced every month since with the exception of April. Fairmount Park was the sixth different venue at which he raced, and Flash of Mischief was making his 12th start without a break. Yet the colt appears to be thriving on racing, winning the $250,000 St. Louis Derby sponsored by Fanduel Sportsbook by one length Saturday night.
Irish Unity and Flash of Mischief ran one-two for about the first mile of the St. Louis Derby, revived this season after a long absence, before Flash of Mischief and jockey Joe Talamo pushed to the lead. Irish Unity attempted to battle back while racing along the inside, but the winner had too much and edged clear in the closing stages.
Gagetown tracked the top pair intently and came out for a run before the quarter pole, but he failed to muster the required acceleration and checked in third, 1 1/4 lengths in front of W W Crazy. Then came Two Worlds, Hozier, and Ekatimorningstrike as the winner was timed in 1:46.59 for 1 1/16 miles over a fast track.
Flash of Mischief, who paid $6.60 as the third choice, won for the fifth time while taking down easily his biggest purse. He was second in the Iowa Derby on July 2, run a respectable fourth in the Grade 2 Amsterdam, won by the brilliant Jackie’s Warrior on Aug. 1 at Saratoga, and appeared to appreciate Saturday night’s return to route racing.
Karl Broberg trains Flash of Mischief for Jerry Namy. Namy bred the colt, a son of Into Mischief and Flashy Campaign, by Political Force.
