Flash and Roll flashes and rolls in Two Million Futurity
CYPRESS, Calif. - She flashed out of the gate and rolled down the stretch.
Flash and Roll ($4.60) displayed a dominating performance to win her second consecutive stakes in Sunday’s $1,878,425 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, the last major race of the year for 2-year-old Quarter Horses.
With the win, Flash and Roll clinched the title of champion 2-year-old filly of 2018 and made a compelling argument for the overall 2-year-old championship. Quarter Horse racing awards titles to the best 2-year-old filly, colt, and gelding and an overall title for the division. The championships will be announced at a ceremony in Oklahoma City in January.
Ridden by G.R. Carter Jr., Flash and Roll had a brilliant start and led her nine rivals by about a length midway through the 400-yard race. Flash and Roll won easily, by 1 1/2 lengths over 5-1 Ali Babe Foose, the fastest qualifier from the Nov. 25 time trials. Flash and Roll was timed in 19.54 seconds.
Lethal Lil, a 12-1 chance, finished third.
Flash and Roll, who won 6 of 7 starts and earned $1,213,752 in 2018, won the $976,950 Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos on Nov. 4. She won her final five starts of the year, including time trials for the Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million futurities.
Owned by Scott Bryant of Lubbock, Texas, Flash and Roll, by First Moonflash, was purchased for $200,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale in 2018.
The win concluded a career-defining weekend for trainer Justin Joiner, 37. On Saturday Joiner won the $600,000 Champion of Champions with Bodacious Eagle.
Joiner said Flash and Roll will be sent to Sunland Park, where he and his father, Mike, have a stable for the winter. Flash and Roll will be turned out on a farm in coming months and will resume racing next summer at Ruidoso Downs.
