Flash and Roll completes Los Alamitos sweep in Super Derby
The champion filly Flash and Roll made some Los Alamitos history Sunday night when she outdueled Powerful Favorite for a neck win in the Grade 1, $1,009,650 Super Derby. She became the first Quarter Horse to sweep the track’s Grade 1 Two Million Futurity, Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity, and Super Derby.
Flash and Roll also earned earned a provisional berth into the 1, $600,000 Champions of Champions on Dec. 14 at Los Alamitos for her win Sunday.
Flash and Roll ($5) was the fastest qualifier for the Super Derby and the second choice to Powerful Favorite, who was seeking to win his eighth consecutive race. She broke well and battled with Powerful Favorite to the line, covering 400 yards on a fast track in 19.51.
With the win, Flash and Roll improved her Los Alamitos record to 6 for 6.
Cody Jensen was aboard in the Super Derby for Scott Bryant and trainer Justin Joiner.
“I got away from the gate like a rocket,” Jensen told publicity at Los Alamitos. “As good as I got away, I thought I’d get the jump on everybody. We hit the ground that first time and Powerful Favorite was right with me, maybe a head or half-neck behind me. The race was on. It was a dogfight from the first jump. Those two extremely good 3-year-olds just hooked up and ripped down through there.”
Eduardo Nicasio rode Powerful Favorite.
“She broke faster, but we were coming after her,” he told publicity. “As he was running, my horse moved towards the inside during one stride. That’s when she got away from us. My horse came back after her, but she kept getting away from us. I love my horse at 440 yards and would love and opportunity to see him at that distance. I would love a rematch against her this year.”
Flash and Roll earned $424,053. The daughter of First Moonflash has now won 10 of 13 starts and earned $1.6 million. Last year she was voted champion 2-year-old filly and overall champion 2-year-old by the American Quarter Horse Association.
