Flap Jack wins maiden in Arlington-Washington Futurity
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
Team England got the best of the $75,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity on Saturday at Arlington.
Flap Jack, trained for Calumet Farm by English import Jack Sisterson, scored a four-length win under English import Sophie Doyle.
Doyle gave Flap Jack an unflappable ride, hugging the fence while stalking the pace in this seven-furlong Polytrack race until turning for home, when she switched outside for a clear run. Flap Jack, making his third start and cutting back from a turf mile, took care of the rest, leveling off to win going away.
Flap Jack came into this race a maiden but had finished an encouraging second behind a slow-pace-setting winner on Aug. 13.
“From day one he has been very forward,” said Sisterson. “He ran a really good race on the undercard Million day. That race gave us some confidence to give him a shot.”
Vincent William pressed by Fast Dreamer set splits of 22.91 and 46.03 seconds, but those two were nowhere at the finish. Woopigsooie, off an Indiana Grand maiden turf-sprint win, came home well from the back of the pack and finished second, three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 favorite Peruvian Boy, who had a spot of midrace trouble. Winning time in what was probably not a sparkling edition of this historic race was 1:24.35. Flap Jack paid $36.60.
Flap Jack is a homebred by the Calumet sire Oxbow and was produced by Synkros, by Tapit. Sisterson said there were no set plans for a fall campaign.
Lipstick in Lassie as favorite fails to finish
Mom’s Red Lipstick wore down 25-1 shot Spitefulness and won the $75,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie by three-quarters of a length. Fifthatnarraganset was a distant third as odds-on favorite Angelcents was pulled up by jockey Jose Valdivia.
Angelcents blasted off to a big early lead but was rank from the start and, according to trainer Larry Rivelli, got her tongue over the bit, causing Valdivia to lose full control of his mount. Valdivia tried to get Angelcents back on track around the turn but the filly bore out and was eventually taken out of the race. Rivelli said in a text message that Angelcents was “fine” and “should be okay going forward.”
Chris Block trains Mom’s Red Lipstick for her breeder, Bob Lothenbach’s Lothenbach Stables, and said training is not the filly’s forte.
“She’s a totally different horse in the afternoon,” Block said.
Indeed, Mom’s Red Lipstick scored an easy debut win before gutting out her stakes victory to take her record to 2 for 2 on Saturday. Fifth at the first call, she came up to chase Spitefulness through quick splits under Jose Lopez before wearing down the Phil d’Amato-trained filly. Mom’s Red Lipstick was timed in 1:24.55 for seven furlongs on Polytrack and paid $9.80 as the second choice.
Mom’s Red Lipstick is by the young stallion Race Day and out of Sweet Lorraine, by Warrior’s Reward.
