Flamboro: Charles Juravinski Memorial Cup eliminations take place

Captain Fear Not and Calicojack Hanover emerged with the wins from a pair of C$35,000 Charles Juravinski Memorial Cup eliminations for 4-year-old male pacers on Sunday evening at Flamboro Downs.

By far the longest shot on the board at 15-1 in the first elimination, Captain Fear Not (Jody Jamieson) got away in the third spot and watched as first Sweet Beach Life (James MacDonald) and then Arbitrage Hanover (Tyler Borth) cut opening-half fractions of 27 seconds and 55 seconds. Captain Fear Not then began a first-over move, tracked by even-money favorite Clever Cody (Louis-Philippe Roy) and Lous World (Bob McClure).

Past the 1:23 1/5 three-quarters, Captain Fear Not wore down and went by Arbitrage Hanover, and although Clever Cody had every chance to go by from there, Captain Fear Not remained clear and strong to the wire, prevailing by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:51 1/5. Clever Cody had to settle for second, followed by Lous World, Chain Gang (Trevor Henry) and Sweet Beach Life.

A Captain Crunch gelding, Captain Fear Not is trained by Paul Reid for owner Kathe Troy. Captain Fear Not has five wins from 23 career starts, has earned C$181,212 and paid $33.70 to win.

In the other elimination, Calicojack Hanover (Roy) led the way early, but he yielded to Captain Luke (Scott Zeron) beyond the 26 2/5 quarter and then Captain Luke gave way to sit behind a brushing Howlenthehills (Travis Cullen). Howlenthehills put the half on the board in 54 4/5 and then Calicojack Hanover made a second move, tipping first-over in front of Timeisonmyside (MacDonald) and Century Komodo (Doug McNair).

Howlenthehills kept Calicojack Hanover at bay through three-quarters in 1:22 4/5, but those two continued to duel side-by-side on the far turn before Calicojack Hanover forged his way past Howlenthehills in the closing strides to prevail by a length and a quarter in 1:50 2/5. Howlenthehills held second from Captain Luke, while Timeisonmyside and Storm Shadow (Bob McClure) were fourth and fifth.
