Flagndini regroups for Laurel allowance
The most interesting race on the Sunday card at Laurel Park is a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds at six furlongs.
Four horses in the seven-horse field each won a maiden race last out, but the horse to beat is Flagndini, who finished eighth as the 2-1 favorite over a sloppy track in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes at Parx on Dec. 6.
“In his last race, I don’t think he handled the track very good,” trainer Ramon Preciado said a few weeks after the Nursery.
Preciado entered Flagndini in an allowance going a mile and 70 yards at Parx on Jan. 4 but decided to scratch him.
“It’s supposed to rain, and I don’t think he is ready to go long,” Preciado said at the time. “I think he will be able to go long, but maybe not yet. He is a very nice horse, and I’m taking my time with him.”
In his career debut and his only race besides the Nursery, Flagndini pressed the early pace and drew off to a 5 3/4-length win in a statebred maiden race at Parx. Since being scratched Jan. 4, he has worked three times, including two five-furlong bullets.
Of the recent maiden winners, Boomshakalaka has the highest Beyer Speed Figure, an 82. That was his first race for Scott Lake after making three starts in Kentucky for trainer Bernie Flint.
Last Confession was up to win his career debut by a neck for trainer Mike Trombetta on Dec. 20, earning a 76 Beyer. The horse he beat, Jackson P, came back to win at 1-5 in his next start.
Unlock the Glory won a Parx maiden race in the mud for trainer John Terranova in his second career start Dec. 2. He has been in steady training at Belmont Park since that race.
