Five stakes close out Keeneland meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Five stakes will help close out the 17-day meet next weekend, with the Grade 2 Fayette anchoring the closing-day card Saturday. Defunded and First Captain are among the older horses expected for the 1 1/8-mile Fayette.
The Fayette will be joined on closing day by the Grade 3 Bryan Station for 3-year-old turf milers and the Bowman Mill for 2-year-olds going six furlongs. The day before, the Grade 3 Valley View and the Myrtlewood are the Friday features.
Friday entries will be drawn Sunday. Closing-day entries will be drawn Wednesday.

After this meet ends, Churchill will work the first four days of its fall meet around the Breeders’ Cup when hosting racing Oct. 30 and Nov. 2, 3, and 7.
* How hungry are horsemen for active stock? The third race here Wednesday seems a fine example. Seven of the eight fillies and mares competing for a $32,000 claiming tag were claimed out of the 5 1/2-furlong race, including the winner, Lady Goldstart, by Juan Cano.
