Spendthrift Farm will add five newcomers, including Grade 1 winners Mitole, Omaha Beach, and Vino Rosso, to its ever-bourgeoning stallion roster in 2020, the farm announced Thursday night. Spendthrift also will add Group 2 winner Coal Front and Grade 2 winner Maximus Mischief. Maximus Mischief is a son of Into Mischief, the nation's leading general sire, and one of the stalwart anchors, along with classic sire Malibu Moon, of Spendthrift's growing stallion roster. The farm, which is owned by B. Wayne Hughes and is known for its robust slate of breeder incentive programs to popularize its young stallions, advertised 25 stallions at its Lexington, Ky., base for the 2019 season. Spendthrift is also active in regional North American markets, and owns an Australian stallion operation. “There is obviously a tremendous amount of history here at Spendthrift, and it’s long been a goal of Mr. Hughes to return this great farm to its better days as a premier stallion operation," Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey said in a release issued Thursday night. "We believe we are doing that. Currently, we are the only North American farm standing three stallions that have multiple Grade 1 winners in 2019, with Malibu Moon, Temple City and, of course, Into Mischief, who’s the No. 1 general sire in the land. The addition of these five new horses will greatly complement our stallion roster and is representative of our commitment. It is the finest group we’ve had the privilege to bring in, and the best this storied farm has seen in decades. There is quality and diversity for every breeder. We’re extremely excited about all five horses and the future of Spendthrift.” :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Omaha Beach, who races for Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm, won a division of the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, followed by the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, to stamp himself as the morning-line favorite for the Kentucky Derby. However, he was scratched days before the race due to an entrapped epiglottis. Spendthrift on Derby week had announced the acquisition of his stallion rights upon his eventual retirement - which will come in time for the 2020 season - giving the farm a son of classic sire War Front, the most expensive stallion in North America in 2019. Omaha Beach, expected to make his return to the races in the Grade 3 Ack Ack Stakes on Sept. 28 at Churchill Downs before potentially targeting the Breeders' Cup, is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Charming, making him not only a half-brother to Eclipse Award champion juvenile filly Take Charge Brandi, but from the immediate family of two young stallions. Charming is out of multiple Grade 1 winner and Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, who is the dam of Eclipse Award champion Will Take Charge and Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy. Will Take Charge finished fifth on last year's freshman sire earnings list, while Take Charge Indy will be repatriated from Korea for the 2020 breeding season due to his success with several graded stakes winners. Spendthrift announced in late August that it would add Mitole to its 2020 roster following his planned start in the Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Santa Anita. The 4-year-old Eskendereya colt, campaigned by Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt, scored his latest victory in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga, establishing a stakes record of 1:20.80 for the seven furlongs. Mitole is also the winner of the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes and the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, the latter considered a stallion-making race, this season. Mitole defeated multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie by three-quarters of a length in the Met Mile; two-time Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow was another neck back in third in a race in which the top six finishers were all Grade/Group 1 winners. Mitole stopped the clock in 1:32.75 for the mile, less than three-fifths of a second off the track record of 1:32.24 established by Najran in 2003. Spendthrift will be standing two of the last three winners of this historic race, as Mor Spirit, also a son of Eskendereya, won the 2017 Met Mile and entered stud at Spendthrift this year. Millionaire Vino Rosso, by consistent classic sire and commercial standout Curlin, won the Grade 2 Wood Memorial last season, but has blossomed this year as an older horse. He won the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita, victorious at the same 1 1/4-mile distance and on the same track the Breeders' Cup Classic will be contested on. Third to McKinzie in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, he is expected to prep in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, also at 10 furlongs, before the Classic. Vino Rosso, who races for Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable, is from the immediate family of current freshman sire Commissioner, who has produced three stakes horses from his first crop, led by Grade 2-placed Powerfulattraction. Coal Front, a 5-year-old by Stay Thirsty, has won 7 of 11 starts and has earned more than $1.7 million for Robert LaPenta and Head of Plains Partners. He took the Grade 2 Amsterdam and Grade 3 Gallant Bob as a 3-year-old in 2017. More recently, he has returned from a layoff of more than a year to be a multiple graded/group stakes winner this season, taking the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park and the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park before earning a signature victory in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile in Dubai. He is expected to start in the Grade 2 Kelso Stakes at Belmont Park as a prep for the Breeders' Cup. In its release Thursday night, Spendthrift indicated that the horse could remain in training later in the year for a race such as the Grade 1 Cigar Mile. Maximus Mischief, by Into Mischief, won three of his four outings in a brief career highlighted by a score in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes as a juvenile and a third in the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes in February. That proved to be his final start, as Cash is King LLC and LC Racing announced his retirement due to a soft tissue injury in April. In contrast to his fellow 2020 newcomers, Maximus Mischief is, thus, already available for inspection at Spendthrift The addition of Maximus Mischief will give Spendthrift another son of Into Mischief - the most popular stallion in American last year, according to The Jockey Club's Report of Mares Bred - to join two-time Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents. Stablemates Cross Traffic and Goldencents finished one-two on last year's freshman sire earnings list for the farm.
