The other stakes on the card: the $35,000 Joanne Dye Breeders Oaks (race 3) pits five 3-year-old fillies at 6 furlongs; the $30,000 Lyman and Bradley Rollins (race 4), a 6-furlong event for 3-year-olds and upward, drew five; the $30,000 Dwight D. Patterson (race 5) pits five 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on turf; and the Ann Owens Distaff (race 8), drew seven fillies and mares at 6 furlongs. Smooth Papa, a 3-year-old gelded son of Papa Clem owned by the Reunion Racing Stables LLC and Kevin Eikleberry and trained by Eikleberry, easily beat maidens here Feb. 2. He then dueled early in the Arizona Breeders before edging clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Jake the Great, Mischievousholiday and Stephen James. He faces all three again. Jake the Great, a 3-year-old gelded son of Top Hit owned by Alvarez Racing LLC and trained by Bill Brashears, kept on gamely to be second in the Arizona Breeders to Smooth Papa and then easily won the Arizona Stallion here April 2. Tactical Attack was no threat in the Arizona Breeders (seventh) but the 3-year-old gelded son of Ez Dreamer, owned by Edward Sepich and John Kozelski and trained by Molly Pearson, came back to be a good second to Jake the Great in the Arizona Stallion. * The top three finishers from the Arizona Breeders here March 11 renew acquaintances in the Joanne Dye Breeders Oaks. Alberta Sun won as the 7-10 favorite, giving the Randy Howg colorbearer and Robertino Diodoro trainee three wins in her last four starts. Reign of Fire rallied for second to Alberta Sun. She next ran fourth against open rivals here April 1 and may appreciate returning to statebred ranks. Who B Dat ran on for third in the Arizona Breeders. She then tried routing and facing males in the Arizona Stallion here April 2 but was a well-beaten third (18 1/4 lengths). Returning to sprinting and facing fillies figure to help. * Two the Punch, Annie’s Boy and Ramblin’ Man, the top three finishers from the Cactus Wren here March 19, go at it again in the Lyman and Bradley Rollins. Two the Punch was notching his second straight win for owner/trainer Jose Silva Jr. and may go favored. That role was given to Annie’s Boy in the Cactus Wren where he set a hot pace before finishing second to Two the Punch. Ramblin’ Man rallied for third but has more speed than he showed that day. * Beat the Heat may benefit from the return to turf in the Dwight D. Patterson. The 6-year-old son of Uh Oh Bango owned by the Triple AAA Ranch and trained by Kory Owens, comes off two third-place efforts on dirt. Three of his four wins have come on grass (in six grass starts). He won this in 2019. Maricopa County has perked up with a return to turf. He comes off a game win over restricted claimers on this course March 30. He ran fourth to Beat the Heat in this in 2019. * Shoe Game, Burnadebt and Arizona Sun, the top three finishers of the Cactus Flower, go at it again in the Ann Owens Distaff. Shoe Game, owned by John McCulloch and trained by Manual Ortiz, was winning for the second straight time and appears to enjoy her new surroundings. Burnadebt stalked in the Cactus Flower, made a run to the lead into the lane but couldn’t quite fend off Shoe Game. Arizona Sun, the 3-10 favorite in the Cactus Flower, was away slowly, rushed into contention but got into a duel and tired to third. An interesting new face is Outside the Law. The 4-year-old daughter of Macho Uno owned by John Campo 3rd and trained by Stacy Campo, was a romping winner of her debut here March 22, earning a Beyer (63) that puts her in the mix with the top three.
