Fitz Right unleashed a furious late kick to win the $150,000 Memories of Silver Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct. Just as she did during a first-level allowance win at Tampa Bay Downs in January, the 3-year-old filly swung into a clear path down the center and bounded away under Flavien Prat to earn her first stakes victory by 3 1/2 lengths. “She was traveling okay,” Prat said, per the New York Racing Association. “The ground was a bit soft, so it was hard to tell the pace, but I was happy with where I was. From the eighth-pole to the wire, she really extended herself and made a good run.” Ultimate Love, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, scratched from the one-mile Memories of Silver, with trainer Michael Trombetta saying that he didn’t want to test her on softer turf after considerable rainfall in New York this weekend. The Brendan Walsh-trained contender Smexy and 30-1 longshot Y’allreadyforthis also scratched from the main field, leaving six 3-year-old fillies in the race. Imperatrice made her first start on turf for trainer Todd Pletcher and proved capable in stiff company, taking early command through an opening quarter-mile in 24.89 seconds. Jockey Manny Franco coaxed the front-runner through a half-mile in 51.79 and stayed a length clear of 29-1 Oscar Bound, who eventually faded to last. Fitz Right settled into fifth on the backstretch and saved her best for the end. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Quiet Street, the 9-5 second choice trained by Bill Mott, made the first compelling move on the pacesetter and took a short lead into the stretch, but Imperatrice dug in and scrapped with her. It would have made a compelling race for the win, but after a slight delay, Fitz Right ranged up outside of both and relegated their duel to a secondary bout. Prat never showed much urgency – and it wasn’t required. “When we turned for home, it took her a little bit to get going but as soon she got herself straightened up, she really leveled off,” said Prat, who had a whopping five wins on the nine-race card. With determined and undeniable momentum, Fitz Right easily reeled in both rivals and kicked clear near the wire. The 7-5 favorite completed the mile in 1:40.50 and paid $4.84 to win. Imperatrice re-rallied to take second back by a length over Quiet Street, who easily held third over three rivals who had no impact in the stretch. When Fitz Right last ran in Florida in January, she was one of countless Chad Brown trainees looking to make a name for herself on the turf. Co-owner Michael Dubb admitted to seeing her as a sort of wild card after a middling juvenile campaign.  “Sometimes they really change from 2 to 3 and sometimes they stay the same,” Dubb said. “Here, we got lucky.” A few scratches and a softer surface might have helped her along, but it’s hard to deny Fitz Right now. Unbeaten as a 3-year-old and now a stakes winner, it’s safe to say she’s well on her way.
