Fish Trappe Road under consideration for Dwyer Stakes

John Bambury Fish Trappe Road (left), second in the Woody Stephens last week at Belmont Park, may return to New York for the Dwyer on July 9.

Trainer Bret Calhoun said he is considering the Grade 3, $500,000 Dwyer Stakes on July 9 at Belmont Park for Fish Trappe Road, most recently second at 25-1 behind another Churchill Downs-based colt, Tom’s Ready, in the Woody Stephens Stakes last weekend. Fish Trappe Road, a gray New York-bred colt, would be stretching out from back-to-back seven-furlong races to a one-turn mile in the Dwyer.

Tom’s Ready, trained by Dallas Stewart, has the Grade 1 King’s Bishop on the Travers undercard as his next main objective.

Racing Club’s second starter may run next Friday

The second 2-year-old owned by the Churchill Downs Racing Club, Dial Me, is scheduled to be entered Sunday for her career debut next Friday. The first Racing Club starter, Warrior’s Club, finished 8 1/4 lengths back when fifth of seven and earned a 54 Beyer Speed Figure in his first career start here Thursday. Both horses are trained by D. Wayne Lukas.

Later on Thursday, Lukas broke a prolonged slump when Airman’s Creed ($15.60) rallied to win a one-mile maiden-claiming race under Jimmy Graham. The victory gave the Hall of Fame trainer a 1-for-40 record at this meet.

◗ As of last week, only three Churchill-based jockeys were confirmed for the Saratoga meet that starts July 22. They are Julien Leparoux, Florent Geroux, and Shaun Bridgmohan, although agent Ruben Munoz said it’s still up in the air whether Ricardo Santana Jr. will ride regularly at the Spa.

◗ Sunday will be the last day of the Churchill meet for Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who is returning to Southern California to prepare for the Del Mar meet with new agent Mike Ciani. Into Friday, Stevens had seven wins from 59 mounts here this spring, with a ride still pending on Effinex, the favorite in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster on Saturday night.

◗ Training at Ellis Park in western Kentucky was suspended for June 11 and 12 to allow maintenance crews to remove rocks from new material mixed into its dirt surface. The 30-day Ellis meet starts July 2, overlapping one day with Churchill, which will close its spring meet that evening with a Downs After Dark card.
