First-timers spice up Thursday card

Jim Dunleavy|Sep 23, 2014

Laurel has put together an interesting card for Thursday that includes three maiden races for 2-year-old fillies – two on turf and one on dirt – and a second-level optional claimer.

The second race of the day is a seven-furlong maiden race. There are two interesting first-time starters in the seven-horse field and a second-time starter trained by Gary Capuano who showed promise in her debut.

Chainsmoknsuprmodl, trained by Graham Motion, is by Super Saver, the leading juvenile and freshman sire in the country. Super Saver’s first crop includes Hopeful winner Competitive Edge, Saratoga Special winner I Spent It, Mountaineer Juvenile winner Hashtag Bourbon, and the impressive maiden-winning filly High Dollar Woman.

Chainsmoknsuprmodl is out of the mare Ascot Starre, who produced 2005 Illinois Derby winner Greeley’s Galaxy, an earner of $460,000. Chainsmoknsuprmodl was a $140,000 yearling buy at the 2013 August at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction.

Sing Lady Sing, trained by Michael Matz, is a half-sister to Social Inclusion by Scat Daddy. She was purchased for $425,000 at the Ocala 2-year-olds in training sale in April, soon after Social Inclusion finished third in the Wood Memorial.

Bay Finn, trained by Capuano, made her debut in the Jamestown Stakes at Laurel, a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for Virginia-bred or -sired horses. She found her best stride too late and had to settle for second behind the 3-10 favorite Hooligan, who is owned and trained by Wesley Ward. Bay Finn should enjoy the seven-furlong distance of this race.

◗ The seventh is a 1 1/6-mile turf maiden race. No Fighting, trained by Motion, was never a serious factor in her debut, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden at Presque Isle, but may improve with the added distance of this race.

The winner of the Presque Isle maiden race, Quality Rocks, came back to win the Arlington-Washington Lassie, has since been privately purchased, and is now trained by Bill Mott. The maiden race runner-up, Charming Entry, is also now a winner.

◗ In the ninth, a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for maidens, Grecian Star is the horse to beat. Trained by Capuano, Grecian Star couldn’t reel in Bullistic in her debut after drifting wide into the stretch but was second best in the 10-horse field.

Trainers Arnaud Delacour and Ignacio Correas IV each has a first-time starter in here that should be considered.

◗ The eighth race is a second-level, $25,000 optional-claiming race at 1 1/16 miles. The question here is what to make of Lotsa Noodles, whom trainer Rudy Rodriguez ships in from New York.

Rodriguez claimed Lotsa Noodles for $25,000 out of a win at Saratoga on July 27. Lotsa Noodles, a 6-year-old mare, has had three works since, one on Aug. 9, one on Sept. 2, and another Sept. 18. She is not entered for the claiming price.
