Friday’s first race at Santa Anita was abandoned on the backstretch after one of the runners crashed through a temporary inner rail early in a turf race at 1 1/8 miles, damaging the rail. Can’t Say That, who started from the inside in a field of 10, appeared to be racing in a tight position shortly after the start when she broke through the inside rail as the field ran through the stretch for the first time. In the incident, Can’t Say That unseated jockey Florent Geroux. The rail was set 20 feet out from the permanent inside position on Friday. Can’t Say That did not fall and ran with the field around the first turn and on the backstretch, staying between the permanent rail and the temporary rail on the inner 20 feet of the turf course. As the field reached the end of the backstretch, track announcer Frank Mirahmadi was notified by track stewards that the race was abandoned. Mirahmadi immediately relayed the information to the riders. :: Santa Anita Classic Meet! Get DRF Past Performances, Clocker Reports, and more. Geroux was cleared by the track’s first-aid department, while Can’t Say That was walked to the barns. The stewards canceled the race because the field was nearing the damaged portion of the rail in the stretch, according to steward Kim Sawyer. She said that track maintenance crews rushed to the broken section of the inside rail and “tried to put it together” in the moments after the incident. “It couldn’t be done,” said Sawyer. The rail was repaired in advance of the third race, the next scheduled race on turf. Because of the cancellation, wagers in the first race were refunded on bets in the win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, pick 3, and early double pools. Bets in the 50-cent early pick five were honored. The payoff for that bet will represent any horse or horses selected in the first race as a winning selection, a track official said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
