The first several months of a new year are always full of foaling announcements, particularly anticipated arrivals for new stallions. The incoming stallions of 2021 – whose resulting first crops are arriving now, roughly 11 months later – were led by 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic. The Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner, standing alongside his sire Into Mischief at Spendthrift Farm, was the most expensive member of his incoming class, with an advertised fee of $75,000. That year's incoming class also included Eclipse Award champions Game Winner, Improbable, and Maximum Security, and other major winners including American classic winners Bravazo, Country House, Tiz the Law, and War of Will.  Below is a snapshot roundup of first foals for young stallions, in alphabetical order by the sire’s name. This roundup will be updated periodically as foals are reported.  Authentic  Horse of the Year Authentic's first reported foal was a colt born Jan. 16 at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.  The colt is also the first foal out of his dam, the Old Fashioned mare Streak of Luck. That California-bred won the Lady Canterbury Stakes at the eponymous track and also was multiple graded stakes-placed in California.  “This is a really nice foal out of a maiden mare," Taylor Made's Frank Taylor said. "Correct, nice body, good angles, athletic-looking, and healthy. We are very happy."  Authentic's championship campaign in 2020 was highlighted by victories in the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic, along with the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational and Grade 2 San Felipe, and runner-up finishes in the Preakness Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. The most expensive incoming stallion in Kentucky for 2021, at a fee of $75,000, he stands alongside his sire Into Mischief at Spendthrift Farm. Into Mischief, the nation's three-time reigning leading sire, has emerged as a sire of sires with the likes of Goldencents and Practical Joke.  Game Winner  Game Winner, the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male, was represented by his first foal, a filly, on Jan. 16. The filly, out of the winning Congrats mare Desire Street, was born at Machmer Hall in Paris, Ky.  She is “a well-balanced, leggy, strapping filly with a great hind leg," Machmer Hall's Carrie Brogden said. “We have already booked a dozen clients and Machmer Hall mares back to him, so this baby certainly helps to justify that faith in this juvenile champion son of Candy Ride."  Game Winner stands alongside his sire, Candy Ride – whose sons at stud also include Gun Runner and Twirling Candy – at Lane's End Farm.  Global Campaign  WinStar Farm’s Grade 1 winner Global Campaign sired his first foal when Country Life Farm in Fallston, Md., welcomed a filly out of the multiple stakes-placed Teuflesberg mare Miss Mystique on Jan. 14.   Global Campaign, by Curlin, scored his biggest victory in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes. He is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and young sire Bolt d'Oro. Gunnevera Multiple graded stakes winner and multimillionaire Gunnevera's first foal is a colt out of the Bluegrass Cat mare Brass Cat.  Gunnevera stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions outside of Ocala, Fla. The farm announced the birth on Jan. 18.  “Gunnevera started life off as a bottle-fed orphan at 10 days old," Pleasant Acres's Helen Barbazon said. "The big chestnut colt went on to race, win, and place at the highest level and in some of the most prestigious races around the world. It’s very exciting to see him produce such an exceptional colt in his first crop."  Honor A. P. A Louisiana-bred filly is the first foal for Honor A. P., whose biggest victory came in the 2020 Santa Anita Derby over eventual Kentucky Derby winner Authentic. The filly, born at Coteau Grove Farms in Sunset, is out of the multiple stakes-winning First Tour mare Joanie's Catch. “The resemblance of this filly to her sire is uncanny, right down to her four white socks,” Andrew Cary, breeder Coteau Grove Farms' bloodstock adviser, said. “There is no doubt about who her sire is. Honor A. P. was right up there with the best of his generation and we likely only saw a fraction of what he was capable of." Honor A. P. stands alongside his sire, champion Honor Code, at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky. Improbable  Improbable, the Eclipse Award champion older male of 2020, sired his first reported foal when a colt was born at Bluewater Farm near Lexington, Ky., the night of Jan. 10.  The colt – a chestnut with a blaze, similar to his sire – was bred by China Horse Club, which co-campaigned Improbable with WinStar Farm, which now stands the stallion, and SF Racing. The colt is out of the winning Into Mischief mare Dark Corner, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Perfect Alibi.  “We’ve been eagerly anticipating the Improbable foals since retiring him to stud in 2021,” said Liam O’Rourke, WinStar’s director of bloodstock services. “We’re thrilled for our longtime partner CHC having his first foal. We look forward to welcoming many more foals out of quality mares like Dark Corner.” Improbable, by City Zip, won the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity as a juvenile and also captured the Street Sense at age 2 and the Shared Belief at 3. As an older horse, he won consecutive Grade 1 events in the Hollywood Gold Cup, Whitney, and Awesome Again before finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Classic.  Maximum Security  Maximum Security, the Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old male of 2019, was represented by his first foal on Jan. 17 when a filly was born at Dell Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky.  The filly, bred by Gary and Mary West, who also campaigned her sire as a homebred, is out of the Tiznow mare Pussyfoot, a full sister to Grade 1 winner Morning Line.  “She’s outstanding. She’s a big strong foal and is very well put together, I’m delighted with her. We have a lot of Maximum Security foals on the way, and if they all look like this we’ll be very happy,” said Des Ryan of Dell Ridge Farm.  Maximum Security was the official winner of eight of his first 10 career starts, including U.S. Grade 1 scores in the Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational, and Cigar Mile, and the inaugural Saudi Cup. In that span, he also crossed the line first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, but was disqualified to 17th for interference.  In another twist to his career, Maximum Security's original trainer, Jason Servis, was among the individuals indicted in March 2020 for alleged race doping. Maximum Security, by New Year's Day, was transferred to Bob Baffert and won 2 of 4 outings, in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap and Grade 1 Pacific Classic. He retired to Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky.  Tom's d'Etat  Grade 1 winner Tom's d'Etat sired his first reported foal in a filly born Jan. 16 at Waldorf Farm in Valatie, N.Y.  The filly is out of the winning Cross Traffic mare Today Comes Once.  Tom's d'Etat, the last prominent son of Smart Strike to stud, won the Grade 1 Clark at Churchill Downs in 2019 to lead six career stakes victories. He stands at WinStar Farm.  Vekoma  Vekoma, whose two Grade 1 wins included the stallion-making Metropolitan Handicap, sired his first reported foal in a filly born Jan. 16 at Crowning Point Farm in Paris, Ky. She is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Bellamy Road mare Bella Alicita.  “She’s a nice filly, we thought she was a colt because of how big she was from a maiden mare," Julie Rini of Crowning Point said.  Vekoma, who stands at Spendthrift Farm, is by Candy Ride. That stallion's successful sons at stud include Gun Runner and Twirling Candy.
