Fire Away takes aim at Dixie Stakes

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Fire Away, winner of last Sunday’s $100,000 Danger’s Hour, is likely to make his next start in the Grade 2, $250,000 Dixie Stakes on May 19 at Pimlico, trainer Shug McGaughey said.
Fire Away won the Danger’s Hour by 1 1/4 lengths over Projected. The victory was the fourth in as many starts over Aqueduct’s turf course for Fire Away, a 6-year-old son of War Front.
McGaughey said he would look to keep Fire Away in races at a mile to 1 1/16 miles. The Dixie is run at 1 1/16 miles.
Projected also could be headed to the Dixie, a race in which he finished second last year.
Meanwhile, Mo Town, who ran third as the favorite in the Danger’s Hour, is headed to the Grade 1, $700,000 Man o’ War on May 12 at Belmont, trainer Tony Dutrow said.
Dutrow felt that Mo Town was too aggressive in the early stages of the Danger’s Hour, placing John Velazquez closer to the early pace than Dutrow would have preferred.
“I think he’ll be a more relaxed horse in his next out,” Dutrow said. “There’s no reason to be discouraged.”
