ARCADIA, Calif. - The two most expensive hips of the 2024 Fasig-Tipton California Yearling Sale swept the stakes for 3-year-old California-bred sprinters at Santa Anita on Saturday. Fionello, listed as sold for $250,000, closed from off the pace to win the $125,500 Echo Eddie Stakes. Slightly more than two hours later, Mohaven, bought for $200,000 and the leading filly at the auction, led throughout the $126,500 Evening Jewel Stakes for fillies. Mohaven ($3.20) was not challenged, leading by 1 1/2 lengths on the backstretch and by 2 1/2 lengths with a furlong remaining. Ridden for the first time by leading rider Emisael Jaramillo, Mohaven won by five lengths, finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:1:16.77. Mohaven was the California-bred champion 2-year-old filly of 2024, a campaign highlighted by a win in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs on Breeders’ Cup weekend at Del Mar. The Evening Jewel Stakes was Mohaven’s second start of 2026. She was fifth of 11 in the Sweet Life Stakes against open company at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course on Feb. 7 in her lone career start on the surface. Mohaven won has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $259,750. Fionello rallies in Echo Eddie Fionello rallied from more than five lengths off the pace to record an upset win by a nose in the $125,500 Echo Eddie Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs. The second-longest shot in a field of six, Fionello ($39.80) caught 8-5 Thirsty Rebel, who had a two-length advantage with a furlong remaining. Antonio Fresu rode Fionello, who was timed in 1:16.70. Fionello earned a Beyer of 77, a career-best. Fionello was last to the turn, and rallied wide through the stretch. “When I put him in the clear, he started rolling,” Fresu said. “I felt confident I could get there. At the wire, I wasn’t sure.” Thirsty Rebel finished a neck in front of 5-1 Galloping Ghost. Tommy Norris, Southern Melodee and Sammy Davis completed the order of finish. Sammy Davis was the even-money favorite. He was third on the backstretch but was out of contention by the turn. Fionello, a gelding by Stay Thirsty, won for the second time in his 10th start in the Echo Eddie Stakes. He won a maiden race at 4 1/2 furlongs in his debut last May and was beaten in his next eight starts – five stakes for statebreds and three allowance races. Fionello races for Terry Lovingier, John Moroney, Sandra Lee Grey and trainer Steve Knapp. Lovingier bred Fionello, who was listed as sold to Moroney at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton California Yearling Sale. Fionello has earned $158,400. Fionello was Fresu’s first win on Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby program. He was unseated in the first race, a turf sprint on the hillside turf course, when Cosmic Heat sustained a fatal injury crossing from the hillside course to the main turf oval.
