Finnegans Wake points to Eddie Read

Finnegans Wake, the leading turf runner in California this year with three graded stakes wins, is a candidate for the $400,000 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf July 18 at Del Mar.
Finnegans Wake was fourth of 11 in the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on dirt June 27 but will go back to turf for the start of the Del Mar summer meeting, trainer Peter Miller said.
Earlier this year, Finnegans Wake won two Grade 2 races at Santa Anita – the San Gabriel and San Marcos stakes – and the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on May 2. The 6-year-old Finnegans Wake later was fourth in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on June 6.

In the Gold Cup, Finnegans Wake raced wide and was beaten 4 1/2 lengths by Hard Aces.
“He lost a ton of ground,” Miller said. “He could have been on the board.”
Owned by Rockingham Ranch and Donegal Racing, Finnegans Wake has won 7 of 31 starts and earned $1,497,975.
The Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes is the richest turf race of the Del Mar meeting, which runs from Thursday through Sept. 7.
